With the building work at Cheltenham Campus’ new construction centre making fast progress, Level 2 Multiskills students were invited last week to a celebratory steel signing on-site. The steel signing marks the beginning of a new chapter for construction training in Cheltenham, as GC looks forward to teaching the next generation of tradespeople sustainable skills.

Acknowledging the collaborative efforts of Gloucestershire College and Beard Construction, the steel signing was attended by Gary Pearce, Site Manager of Beard Construction, and staff and students from Gloucestershire College’s construction department.

It was a great opportunity for the students to see the works first-hand, learn about the building processes, and look forward to the growing possibilities for construction training in Cheltenham.

Level 2 Multiskills student, Jakub, said: “It’s great because there are more opportunities around college, and it’ll be open to more people wanting to work in construction and trades.”

From September 2024, Cheltenham campus will be adding to its options, with courses covering electrical installation, plumbing, and carpentry, as well as the construction courses and apprenticeships already offered there such as multiskills and our Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction T Level.

Dave Cook, Lecturer in Construction, welcomes these changes for the local area:

“This new construction centre is definitely needed here because there’s a big demand growing. We’ve got the new cyber park, for example, and they’ll need loads of trades – plumbers and electricians, etc. So why not train them locally? It’s a great transition from this full-time course in Cheltenham, to staying onsite and getting an apprenticeship. It just makes sense.”

Commenting on the opportunities for students in Gloucestershire, Gary Pearce, Site Manager for the build, said: “It’s just a great opportunity for the local students, to be given something like this ready for their career paths as they’re going forward.”

With a growing number of ambitious construction projects being undertaken in Cheltenham and the surrounding areas, now is a great time for students to gain the right skills and qualifications to build rewarding careers in construction.
