Validated through Birmingham City University this innovative two-year programme allows you to ‘work, earn and learn’ using flexible modes of education including work-based learning and a blended learning approach.  Students who complete the full 2 year course will be eligible to apply for a full adult nursing degree with Birmingham City University and will be credited with the first year of the full BSc Hons degree course in Adult Nursing, allowing them to join in the second year providing they meet the entry criteria.

The Foundation Degree develops relevant clinical skills underpinned with theoretical knowledge in order to prepare healthcare practitioners for a rapidly-evolving service across a variety of care settings.

The flexibility of this course will enable you to continue caring for service users within your current place of work whilst you:

  • Develop your clinical skills within practice
  • Access experienced clinicians for training and mentor support

The Foundation Degree Health and Social Care programme is committed to developing workers who will be compassionate, caring, knowledgeable and productive members of inter-professional teams, with the ability to be adaptable and flexible in order to respond to the ever-changing needs and priorities of the services we support.

Who is this course for? 

This full time work based learning programme is aimed at people who are currently working in a health and /or social care setting.

The course contains:

    Year 2 (120 credits)

    • Introduction to Evidence Based Healthcare and Research Methods
    • Becoming a Paraprofessional
    • Application of advanced knowledge and skills to practice (Adult Care)

    Optional modules

    • Wound management
    • Influencing practice in dementia care
    • Palliative and end of life care
    • Advanced negotiated practice development
    • Transition to nursing studies

You will learn through a range of practices including lectures, seminars, tutorials, presentations and directed learning. You will have access to a wide range of resources to support your learning on the college VLE, Moodle. All students will have a personal tutor to support their learning and professional practice.  You will spend 6 hours per a week on campus, and the rest of the time in your current workplace. 

A variety of assessment methods is used to reflect the range of theoretical concepts, knowledge and practical skills that is developed in this course. Assessment methods include coursework, presentations, case studies, skills assessments, portfolios, exam and projects.

An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service Check is required.

Work based learning in health care placements will be a major factor in the teaching and learning in both years. You will participate in a range of learning activities including essays, reports, skills assessments, tests and case studies related to practice; you will compile a practice portfolio and reflective log on your professional practice. Mentors and service users will be involved in providing feedback to inform the student learning experience in practice. The College is well equipped and has a full range of resources.

  • GCSE at grade C or above in English Language and Mathematics; Equivalent qualifications such as Key Skills Level 2, Adult Numeracy Level 2, Adult ;Literacy Level 2, CSE grade 1 and functional skills level 2 in Maths and English will be accepted. Irish leaving certificate – Maths and English Ordinary Level passes at grade B or above. Scottish qualifications – Maths and English passes at Intermediate Standard 2 or above. In addition to the above you will be required to have: (evidence of working at level 3) A Level, As Level or A2 level , AVCE double award. BTEC National Award, Access to He Diploma in Health and Social Care,(Full award , 60 credits),NVQ 2 or 3 plus English and Maths at grade C or above or equivalent, Cache Award, Certificate or Diploma Full award. Portfolio route A portfolio route has been devised for those applicants who are already working in a health or social care setting and who do not meet the formal entry requirements. To follow this route you are still expected to possess GCSE Maths or equivalent. The portfolio should include: Two written testimonies (one of which must be from your employer) supporting your application • One reflective piece that draws on your current practice (1,500 words) • All pieces of work should be endorsed by your line manager. The portfolio should be submitted within two weeks’ post application, following discussion with the Head of School. You have to be in substantive employment in a Health and Social Care setting, with support from your employer, if working part time, 25 hours minimum is required. Your employer must agree to support you at work by providing you with a mentor and assessor for the duration of the course. The assessor must be a registered professional , such as Nurse, Social Worker, Occupational Therapist or Midwife. Applicants whose first language is not English must have a minimum of IELTS score of 7.0 overall with 6.5 in each section. Please note the University's published list of alternative English Language qualifications does not apply to this course. Additional Selection Criteria As well as meeting the academic entry requirements, applicants should meet the following selection criteria: Disclosure of Criminal Background - the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 does not apply and all convictions, including those which are spent, must be disclosed. Applicants who are offered a place must undergo a Criminal Record Bureau check and will be required to complete a Disclosure Application Form. All information will be treated in confidence and only taken into account when absolutely necessary.
  • Careers/further study On successful completion of the Adult Nursing pathway of this course, you will have the opportunity to progress on to the final part of a relevant bachelors degree with honours programme at BCU. This involves a further 18 months of training in order to become a registered Adult Nurse.
