Course Overview

Part Time
Certificate

If you like to be in the water, this flexible course that is suitable for all from beginners to serious swimmers, would be a great way for you to exercise.

The course will follow a set programme of recreational and vocational activities to encourage, promote and develop your personal skills, confidence and physical abilities.

Should you wish, you will be given the opportunity to work towards swimming badges.

For your safety, qualified lifeguard assistance in the pool is provided.

Your tutor will regularly review your activities and offer you support and guidance.  You will be encouraged to identify small, realistic and achievable goals to work towards throughout the course.

Learners are expected to attend regularly i.e. at least 80% of the course.  Please make sure you arrive on time for the start of the class.  It can be very disrupting for the class when people arrive late.

  • This course is aimed at adults (aged 19 and over and the start of the academic year) with mild physical or learning difficulties. Care support is not available through the college but learners must be supported by their own carers, who will be expected to participate in the activities. Enrolment enquiries for Adult LDD courses should be referred to Gloucestershire College Community Administration on 01594 838440.

  • Your tutor will be able to advise you of any follow on or suitable alternative opportunities.

Sport and uniformed public service courses can lead to a wealth of exciting opportunities and prepare you for a life of responsibility.

Sport and Physical Activity

The sport and recreation industry is an increasingly popular area of study, providing employment opportunities in sports development, sports coaching, fitness and related areas. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills in a range of practical and theory modules, learning from industry experts.

Uniformed Public Services

GC offers a wide range of real emergency service and armed forces experiences as part of the uniformed public services course. This has led to many former students going on to join the emergency services (Police, Fire and Ambulance Service) and the armed forces (Army, RAF or the Royal Navy) upon successful completion of their course.

Student Stories

Kyle Gomez

I’ve always wanted to do something to help the community and being in the police interested me, so I applied to study UPS at GC after a friend recommended it to me. I’ve formed really close friendships with my class through the team-building activities we do on the course. My dream is to work in the police and specialise in firearms; I’m considering going to university but ideally would like to go straight into the police once I complete my course.

Beckii Grount

I didn’t want to go to sixth form so I went to an open evening and I was impressed with the course and facilities. I’d like to join the police as a dog handler so this course was a good place to start. It’s been great getting to know everyone and making new friends and the expeditions. You’ve got nothing to lose! You’ll meet loads of friendly new people and the teachers treat you like adults."
