Over the course of the three terms students will:

  • become familiar with the basic rules of grammar, enabling them to create simple sentences independently
  • through the study of the language, become familiar with many aspects of life and culture

By the end of the course: students will have studied a selection of the following topics:

  • Greetings, goodbyes and other social expressions
  • Family and personal details
  • Numbers, dates, time, colours
  • Where I live / my home
  • Free time and hobbies / likes and dislikes
  • Out and about (in the cafe/restaurant, directions, shopping, booking a room in a hotel)

Students will become familiar with grammatical structures such as:

  • Gender (masculine, feminine, neuter)
  • The present tense of regular and some irregular verbs.
  • Question and negative forms

What materials or equipment need to be provided by the student?

  • A suitable device for online learning.
  • There are no entry requirements for the Beginners Course. All that is required is enthusiasm and a willingness to put in regular study outside the classroom

  • If students complete the course successfully, provided there is sufficient interest, they could join the French Beginners course in September.

Many businesses work with companies abroad, or have branches in other countries. This gives speakers of multiple languages an advantage when it comes to working with larger companies and organizations.

We have courses in French, German, Spanish, and other languages for use in business and socializing. You might end up working for a global investment firm, or as a translator for the police!

Please note, all Language courses (excluding British Sign Language) are roll on courses, which involves students enrolling from one term to the next, building on the knowledge and skills learnt in the previous term. In exceptional circumstances and at the tutor’s discretion, it may be possible to join in-year, if there is already a foundation of language learning at the relevant level.
